Sam was the son of William Smith and Agnes Eleanor Anderson. He was born in England and spent his early life there. At age 23, he came to the USA, arriving 3 Sep 1923 aboard the Olympic. He headed first for his Anderson relatives in Biddeford, Maine. Later he made his home near Anderson relatives in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In 1930, he's living with his aunt (Anna (Doran) Anderson and he was working at the Assembler Auto Company.

By 1931, he's living on his own at 790 Liberty, Springfield, Massachusetts and working for Westinghouse.

By 1942, Sam is registering for service in WWII. He's living in Hampden County, Massachusetts and is single with no dependents. He was a veteran of World Wars I and II, serving with the British Army in the first war and with the United States in the second.

At the time of his death in 1957, Sam is living at Stebbins Rd., Monson, Hampden County, Massachusetts.

Sam dies in the home of his nephew, Edward Anderson.

Sam was a member of the Notre Dame Club in Springfield.

Survivors include two brothers, Richard and Harry; three sisters, Mrs. Jane Henshaw, Mrs. Dinah Kay, and Mrs. Esther Bailey, all in England; two nephews, including Edward, with whom he made his home.

His funeral was held with Rev. Johnathan Morrill, pastor of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, officiating at the parlors of Palmer Funeral Service. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery.
