Lee McHargue, former postmaster, sheriff and publisher, died Saturday in Corbin of a heart ailment. He was 89. McHargue originated the idea for the Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park.

Lee B (L.B.) McHargue did extensive research on the history of the Daniel Boone Trace in Laurel County. McHargue's article from June 4, 1942 published in the Sentinel Echo newspaper entitled "Boone and Skaggs Trace Through Laurel County," was a detailed description of Boone's path through the county. The article is available in newspaper archives and at the local historical society. McHargue gathered information from old deeds, interviews with old timers, and research at the Kentucky Historical Society, to compile perhaps the most invaluable and comprehensive description of Boone Trace through Laurel County that has ever been written. McHargue was a member of the Ky Susquentenial Celebration committee, set a number of historical markers all around Laurel County, and helped establish Levi Jackson Park. The contributions of Mr. McHargue continue to educate historians to this day.
