Immigrated to New York from Ireland during the Famine, in 1849 with his entire family. Brother died aboard ship. While trying to support his family as a child, he was convicted and sent to the House of Refuge on Randall's Island with his friends for theft. During the end of his stay, the Refuge enlisted him directly after the war broke. He survived disease and hard fighting, and became a veteran of the 71st Pennsylvania Infantry and the 69th Pennsylvania, promoted from Musician to Principal Musician (Fife). Married to Grace Morse in California, with daughters Elsie and Theresa Madge, who later married famous English conductor and music teacher, William Adolphus Gregory.
