He married Martha Linda Kollar on February 14, 1861, in Tuscarawas County, OH. He filed for divorce on June 16, 1890. Sam and a couple of his brothers left Ohio and moved to Kansas in 1879.
He married Jenny Weeks Marsh, January 1, 1891 in Russell County, KS.
