WILLIAM GEARHART,
farmer. Mr. Gearhart is of German parentage, but was himself born and reared in this county. His father, Martin Gearhart, was born in Prussia in about 1805, and his mother, formerly Miss E. Layman, was also of German birth, but both came to this country early in life, and settled in Ohio. They had a family of thirteen children, of whom ten are living. William was born in Crawford County, Ohio, on the 21st of February, 1837, and was reared in that State. In 1858, at the age of twenty-one, he came out to Missouri, and lived here for five years engaged in farming, after which he returned to Ohio and was married to Miss Sarah Shupp, daughter of Michael Shupp, of that State. He then returned to Missouri and settled in Wayland township of this county, where he has since lived. Here he has a 220 acre farm substantially and well improved. Mr. and Mrs. Gearhart have a family of six children: J. Morris, Ida May, Mary Ester, Win. L., Rolandus M. and Mattie Adelia. Both parents are members of the M. E. Church South.
