When the family got ready to leave New Brunswick, apparently Julia Ann's mother, Ann Grant, took David, who was 15, and hid him. This was a great hardship on the parents to leave this child behind. He lived with his grandmother who took care of him and some of her older grandchildren until her death in 1860. He then lived with his Uncle Charles and his wife. Found on his headstone at a church in Northampton, "David Bagley, age 25, died in 1865, who came by his death driving logs in the Narrows on Gibson Mill Stream in May 1865.
