Elmer Chester was the last child born to Robert and Susan Applegate Smith. He married Lorene Engle Layton in Astoria in 1901 and they had the following children: Robert Layton Smith, Charles Engle Smith, and Mary Elizabeth Smith.

Word was received yesterday of the death in San Jose, Cal., of Elmer C. Smith, ex-Portland resident and retired railroad man. He was buried in Spokane August 12.

Mr. Smith was born in Yoncalla 67 years ago. His mother was Susan Applegate, a daughter of pioneers. Mr. Smith was employed by the Union Pacific railroad in different capacities for more than 40 years. Before his retirement he was traveling auditor for the O-W, R. & N.

Beside his widow, who resides in San Jose, he is survived by Mrs. L. Warner of Yoncalla, a sister; two sons, Robert L. of San Francisco and Charles E. of Spokane, and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Smith of Portland.
