Rosier was the illegitimate son of Temperance Wingate and James Shirley. Rosier was raised by and lived with his father's family at least until 1850, where he is listed in the census as "Rosier Sherley." Shortly after this he moved to Baker Co. GA to be closer to his mother and other half-siblings. He married Martha Ann Shiver in 1852, most likely in Baker Co. (in which the records have been destroyed). Rosier decided to use the last name of "Wingate" instead of "Shirley" since he was living near his mother.

Co. A 8th GA Cav.
CSA pension courtesy of GA virtual vault says he was moving a caisson (artillery? hard to read writing) he was pushed off and had fingers mashed. Finger had to be amputated in North Carolina in Feb 1863.
