After the hard journey of traveling from Denmark to Liverpool and from their to America, little Juliane Swaner set out with her family for Utah. They left from Mormon Grove, Kansas, June 13, 1855, in the Company of Jacob F. Secrist. Cholera struck the Scandinavian group claiming many including their leader Jacob Secrist. Noah T. Guymon then took over. Sickness had already claimed the life of Juliane's older sister Meriam while crossing the ocean; 4 year old Juliane would also subcomb to the dreadful cholera. One of the leaders in the group, Peter Olsen Hansen kept careful records in his journal of who died and when. On 26 June, 1855 he recorded: "we burried a little child which had died with the colerah [cholera] Also, a 3 year old girl of Niels Clemensen."
It is possible that the "little child" was Juliane. This was before crossing the Big Blue River in Nebraska. This was not in Mormon Grove, Atkinson County, Kansas but for purposes of giving Juliane an actual place of burial, Mormon Grove is her representation from wence she started her journey across the plains.
