Elsie M. Turnley

YAKIMA - Elsie M. Turnley, with her family by her side, peacefully passed away March 3, 2005, just two days short of her 99th birthday. She was born March 5, 1906 in a tent in Ringold, WA to Marion O. Phend and Elizabeth (Hofer) Phend who were pioneers of Franklin County. Elsie was raised and educated in Eltopia, WA, where she completed high school. She then attended State Normal School in Cheney, WA, now Eastern Washington University, for nearly two years until she met her future husband, Forrest M. Turnley during the summer of 1928. Elsie and Forrest were married in the fall of 1928 in Yakima, WA where they lived until the fifties. They moved to Kent, WA, but returned to live in Naches, WA in the late sixties. Elsie and Forrest worked mostly on farms and orchards while raising their family.

Elsie had many interests. In her teens, she had a love for horses and rode many miles in and around the sage and sand of Eltopia. After marriage it was child raising during the depression years where she attained excellent sewing skills to provide clothing for her children. As the children entered school, she became involved in Cub Scouting, Camp Fire Girls and 4-H. She, as a leader in 4-H, encouraged their participation in the Central Washington Fair. Elsie enjoyed the Fair whether being a participant in 4-H, as just a fair "goer," or in later years as a "Granger." She last attended the fair in 2002 at the age of 96. Son Forrest became involved in Stock Car Racing in the late 1950's and Elsie was an avid fan of Northwest Stock Car Racing thereafter.

After the passing of her husband in 1969, Elsie had to learn how to drive to continue to provide for herself. She started working in fruit warehouses in the upper valley until she was in her eighties. During this time she became more active in the Naches Grange and was a "Granger" until she passed. She was a member of the "Illahee Ladies Club," was a member of the Yakima Gem and Rock Club, and enjoyed collecting stamps. She was an avid reader of Northwest History and a member of the "Franklin County Historical Society."

Elsie lived a busy and projective life through some destitute and difficult years, but she was a determined woman and a survivor.

She leaves behind five children, Harold (Bertie) Turnley of Desert Aire, WA, Forrest L. Turnley of Federal Way, WA, Richard R. Turnley of Tacoma, WA, Dorothy M. Mudd (Ray) of Kent, WA and Dale O. Turnley (Jan) of Riverside, CA. She had 35 grand and step-grandchildren and 56 great-grand and step-great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grand and step-great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Arba Showalter of Everett and special ex-daughters-in-law, Cynthia (Turnley) Rutan of Bremerton, WA, Margaret (Turnley) Vasbinder of Bremerton, WA, Marsha Turnley of Seattle, WA, Sharon (Turnley) Sheets of Eugene, OR. Other survivors include 3 nieces and 3 nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Elizabeth Phend; husband, Forrest M. Turnley; infant children, Stanley and Ruth Turnley; son, Raymond H. Turnley; three grandchildren; sister, Alta Robison; brother, Joe Phend; daughters-in-law, Gloria D. Turnley and Florence (Floss) Turnley.

Many thank-you's to all the wonderful people at Alterra Wynwood Assisted Living and Grandview Health Care Center for the excellent care and service they provided the past seven years. A special thanks to Marla Lisk , whom she thoroughly enjoyed and made her weekly hair care day a "special" day.

Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and Great-Great-Grandma, you will be greatly missed and may you rest in peace that has been well earned. We love you!

Viewing will be Sunday, March 6 from 1-4 p.m. and Monday, March 7 from 9 until 11 a.m. at the Terrace Heights Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home. Graveside Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 7 at 1 p.m. at Terrace Heights Memorial Park in Yakima.
