In the 1850 U.S. Census, mill man David Pineo, 46, born Maine, was living in Calais, Maine, with Amelia, 43; Josiah, 14; George W., 12; Minerva, 6; David, 2; and Stephen, four months, all born in Maine; Elisa Hall, 17, born N.B.; and teamster Anson Abbott, 18, born N.H.
David and Amelia married on February 7, 1832 in St. Stephen.
"When he was a young man, he came to Calais from Machias, making his way through the woods by the aid of spotted trees; and in 1836 he engaged in the manufacture of lumber which he followed successfully for 10 years. About the year 1846 he embarked in mercantile business. This he carried on a number of years, his last days passed in retirement.
Previous to the Rebellion, he voted with the Democratic Party but in 1861 he became a Republican
In his younger days he was actively interested in military affairs.
In his religious belief he was a Methodist and for many years was identified with that church as an official and class leader." (Maine, A History, Volume 5)
