Son of Edward M. Durant and Annie Moore Smith Husband of Alice
Frank was a master seaman in his early adult years sailing to Cuba and Antwerp and other exotic places.
We are anxious to learn more of his life and if they had children if any of them see this site.

CHATHAM - Frank M. Durant, 93, a retired cargo ship captain and former owner of a West Yarmouth motel, died yesterday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

Mr. Durant was the husband of Alice M. (McGuirk) Durant.

He was born and raised in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, Canada, where he graduated from the Canadian Maritime Schools.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Durant was a deck officer and shipmaster (captain) of United Fruit Co. cargo ships, sailing out of many East Coast ports to Europe and the Caribbean.

During World War II, Mr. Durant sailed on troop transport and supply ships of the Libert Victory classes with the merchant marines. During one voyage, his ship was torpedoed and he spent six days in the water before being rescued.

Mr. Durant lived in Dedham from 1938 to 1949, when he and his wife moved to West Yarmouth, where they owned and operated the Fair Winds cottage motel.

They retired to Chatham in 1974. Mr. Durant was a communicant of Holy Redeemer Church in Chatham.

Besides his wife, Mr. Durant is survived by a daughter, Anne Deborah Durant of Belmont and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Nickerson Funeral Home, Crowell Road, Chatham.

A Mass will be celebrated in Holy Redeemer Church, Highland Avenue, Chatham, at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Seaside Cemetery, Chatham.
