She was the oldest girl in a multi-family of 12 children. She worked in her father's blacksmith business bookkeeping and helped raise the children. She did photography work for insurance claims, worked for the American Locomotive Factory in Dunkirk, and did modeling for the John Roberts school of modeling in New York City. She studied with her fiancé and got her private pilots license before he left for the war. Upon his return they were promptly married and started a military career that encircled the globe, 33 moves in 30 years. She raised 4 children and supported her husband's career and many endeavors after retirement.
