WOODFORD - Dr. John Gillam Irons Jr., 84, died July 26, 2011, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born in Bennington, July 10, 1927, the son of J. Gillam and Gladys Mae (Spicer) Irons.

He attended Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass., was a graduate of Middlebury College in 1950 and Tufts University Dental School in Boston in 1954.

Dr. Irons married Gene Prescott Edgar in 1950.

After graduation, he joined his father practicing dentistry in Bennington. He and his wife became owners of Old Bennington Country Store and Yankee Notions. He retired from dentistry in 1986.

He worked with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, was a member of Bennington Rotary Club and served as a justice of the peace.

Dr. Irons held a private pilot's license and also enjoyed hunting, skiing, traveling, camping trips and his camp in Woodford, where he and his sons built his home.

Survivors include his wife of Woodford; three children, John "Jock" III of Fairbanks, Alaska, Katherine "Kerry" of Kodiak, Alaska, and Malcolm Irons of Bennington; a grandson; a brother, Dr. Howard Irons of Boca Raton, Fla., and Killington; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Irons, in 2007.

The service to celebrate his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at Second Congregational Church in Bennington with the Rev. Mary Lee-Clark officiating.

Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bennington Museum, in care of Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
