Civil War Confederate Guerrilla. A member of William C. Quantrill's guerrilla band, he accompanied Quantrill from Missouri to Kentucky in the last months of the Civil War. On May 10, 1865 Quantrill's band had taken refuge in the barn of James Heady Wakefield near Smileytown (now Wakefield, Kentucky.) to avoid a rainstorm. They were surprised by Home Guards led by Captain Edwin Terrell who had been searching for Quantrill's command. When Quantrill's horse was wounded and became unmanagable, Clark Hockensmith, seeing his plight, attempted to take Quantrill up behind his own mount. Quantrill was fatally wounded in the spine in the attempt. Hockensmith was killed outright attempting to escape. His remains were taken to Bloomfield, Kentucky for burial.
