Founder of Cowlestown (Santee)

When George Algernon Cowles was born on April 5, 1836, in Bloomfield, Connecticut, his father, Algernon, was 33 and his mother, Susan, was 13.

He married Jennie F Blodgett on December 16, 1862. He died on November 26, 1887, in San Diego, California, at the age of 51, and was buried in California.

George Cowles arrived in San Diego already wealthy (but in noticeable poor health having earlier contracted malaria in Florida). George had knowledge and experience in farming, machinery, business and finance. He purchased about four thousand acres east of San Diego which was comprised of two ranch sites about a mile apart. One was named "Woodside" in the Santee Valley where their home was located (just off today's northeast corner of Woodside and Magnolia Ave) and the other was named "Magnolia", located further to the south. Together, they included much of present-day central Santee and was originally known as Cowlestown.

Cowles died on November 26, 1887 at 51 years old. He essentially left all of his estate to Jennie as they had no children. The estate was considerable, estimated between $370,000 & $500,000 at that time which is comparable to about $15-20 million today.

George Cowles legacy still lives on today by the well known landmark Cowles Mountain, the only remaining landmark still utilizing our community founder's name.
