John Finley was born in Newton, Steward Co., Tyrone, Ireland. Together with his brother, Robert Finley, he came to America, landing in New York on July 12, 1852, coming directly to Woodford County, Illinois, which was his home for the remainder of his life. November 25, 1858, Mr. Finley was married to Charlotte Cherrington. To this union eight children were born, six of whom died in childhood. The children were as follows: Aaron and twin sister, Harriet (both died within a month of birth) Albert (13 months at death) William Leander (13 months at death) Luella Belle (10 years at death) Eliza Melinda "Mellie", Samuel Nelson (17 months at death) Anna Jane "Annie", Fannie B. (13 years at death). Wife Charlotte died in 1897. He was then united in marriage to Rebecca Huey. In early life, Mr. Finley gave his life to the Lord and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and for over fifty years he endeavored to walk in his Master's footsteps. In his home he was a kind husband, and indulgent father and an excellent neighbor.
