William S. Teall, 85, a descendant of the old Teall family noted in the history and development of Syracuse, died Wednesday in a convalescent home after a short illness.
For 35 years he was employed in the city Water Finance Office. His father was William W. Teall, one of the founders and first treasurer of the Syracuse Savings Bank. He was a grandson of Gen. Edwin V. Sumner, of Civil War fame.
Teall avenue was named after his father, and part of Fayette Park was donated to Syracuse by members of his family.
Born in the old Teall home in E. Fayette st., March 26, 1870, Mr. Teall received his early education in St. John's Military Academy, and was one of the school's first graduates.
He won an appointment to West Point but he did not accept it, and instead went to work for Sanderson Steel Co. Later he became associated with the Halcomb Steel Co. where he remained several years before entering the insurance business.
Mr. Teall later worked for the city Water Bureau.
He lived at 206 Melbourne Ave., until he entered the convalescent home.
His second wife, the former Gertrude Schaffer, died last year.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. James Arthur of Plainfield, N.J.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Private services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Dawson Funeral Home. The Rev. Harold L. Hutton will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
