Wilfred "Billy" Melcher was the son of Fred and Theresa Huseman Melcher. He was an Army veteran of World War II in Europe and took part in the invasion of France on "D-Day", June 6, 1944. He married Jessie Manderfield on Nov 7, 1946, in Waterloo and she died Nov 6, 1973. They had no children. He worked at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor works from 1946 until 1972, when he retired. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, UAW Local 838, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Billy died at his home of a heart attack. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one brother.

Was brother of Gunda (Pillen), Emma (Mark), Raymond, Marie (Berg), Arnold, Clarence Melcher, Leona (Langan), Andrew, Ervin, Eursula and Jolette Melcher.
