Obituary

Audrey Carney-Webb

Audrey Carney-Webb, the last remaining survivor of the ever popular historical area located in Kimberling City, which was made famous in Harold Bell Wright's novel, "The Shepherd of the Hills," passed from this life into eternal rest April 16, 2003 at the young age of 96.

Ms. Carney-Webb, a native of Stone County, Mo., spent her entire life in both Stone and Barry Counties, living her life to the fullest. Ms. Carney-Webb was born March 6, 1908, the daughter of the late Calvin Carney and Maude Johnston-Carney of Cape Fair, Mo. Audrey's late uncle, Homer C. Johnston, and his wife, Suzie Morrill-Johnston, both inspired Harold Bell Wright to cast them as the central characters of his world-famous book, "The Shepherd of the Hills." Many of the passages of this famous book were taken out of the real daily life events of the Johnston and Morrill families.

On August 6, 1926, Audrey Carney joined hands in marriage to Frank Webb in Purdy, Mo., where they resided for the next 37 years, until his passing June 8, 1963.

Frank Webb operated a used car agency.

Frank and Audrey were blessed with six children who remained in the local area and established their family presence by being involved in many area businesses of their own: Norma Alice Webb-Burtrum of Burtrum Brothers Motor Company; Oral Allen Webb of Webb Equipment Company, Joplin, Mo.; Jack Lawton Webb of Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center; Gale Lavern Webb of Webb Transportation; and Naomi Anita Webb of Stonegate Glass Chapel, Branson, Mo.

Her son, Loren Lee Webb of Webb Trucking, Purdy, Mo., preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Lee E. Carney, San Antonio, Texas and Oklahoma City, who had one son, Michael L. Carney, who has the first bachelor's degree in funeral service education in the world (1966), and his daughter, Megan Laurayne Carney, both of Oklahoma City.

Also surviving is her sister, Edna Henson, who has three children, of Boise, Idaho.

Audrey's pride and joy was the unconditional love she shared with all of her 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include her grandsons, Joe Allen Webb, Donnie Webb, Mike Webb, Jimmy Webb, Tim Webb, Gary Dean Mitchell, Frankie Lee Webb, and Joe Burtrum Jr., and her granddaughters, Audrey A. Burtrum-Stanley, Felicia Webb-Joines, Melissa Webb-Snow, Cindy Mitchell-Renshaw, and Linda Mitchell-Winslow. One grandson, Rusty Webb, preceded her in death.

Audrey was Purdy's oldest citizen, living there longer than any other person. She was a seamstress who was commissioned to make several of her neighbors' burial dresses. She was very civic minded and insisted that her family take part in anything to better the community and themselves. She was loved, respected and admired for her constant Christian walk with the Lord. Audrey was involved in many community and civic projects, including serving as past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. She had also kept a diary since 1933 that included history of her family, Purdy, Mo. and the surrounding area.

Graveside services will be held at Purdy Cemetery at 2 p.m. Monday, and will be conducted by her granddaughter's husband, Greg Snow, pastor of First Baptist Church, Diamond, Mo.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home, Monett, Mo.
