ROTH'S, CITY'S OLDEST STORE, TO CLOSE OUT

Desire of Head of the Firm To Retire, Leads To This Decision By Its Members

Roth & Company, Fairfield's oldest business house, today announced that it would go out of business with the expiration of its lease, May 15, on its store room. This decision was reached after M. W. Roth (sic. Milton W. Roth) had to retire from active business life. Ninty (sic) days notice of the desire to terminate the lease was given J. A. Beck, owner of the building, February 15.

For sixty years there has been a Roth store in Fairfield. The business was established by J. E. Roth (sic. John Edward Roth, brother of Milton W. Roth) when he came back from the Civil War, and at first it was located in the building now occupied by Mark Hoskins at the south end of the east side of the square. It occupied half of the room with J. M. Crawford.

A little later (sic. in 1905 or so, on the east side of the Fairfield business square) Mr. Roth bought the lot and build the present store building. Afterward he bought the Tom Bell building adjoining it on the west. About two years ago he sold both buildings to Mr. Beck. At that time the business vacated the upstairs room over the present store.

M. W. Roth came into the business fifty-one years ago. J. M. Hammer followed soon after and O. E. Kirby went to work in the business twenty-three years ago. One by one they became members of the firm. J. E. Roth retired some years ago.

The entire stock and fixtures will be closed out within the next three months.
