William was a resident of Pesotum, Illinois, when on December 8, 1863 he enlisted as a Private in the 17th Illinois Cavalry. His unit's military action was primarily in Missouri. After two years of war he was debilitated by sickness, so was discharged 20 December 1865. By 1870 he was a resident of Bay City, Michigan and working as a grocer. In 1871 he married Elizabeth Corman, born PA 1851, and they had 6 to 8 children. William remained a merchant across his life, and died at age 59 of cardiac problems.
