James Boyce was born in Gaston County, North Carolina on January 25th 1860. His father was Rev. Ebenezer Erskine Boyce and his mother Miss Rachel E. McElwee. James had good educational opportunities in his early youth; when 13 years of age, he spent some time at Elk Shoals Academy in Statesville, North Carolina. The influence of the teachers, especially Rev. William Barron Pressly, the principal, was very great, and has been a blessing and great factor in the formation of his character. He graduated from Erskine College in 1878. During the three years spent in college, he lived with his uncle, Dr. James Boyce and enjoyed the best of opportunities for development of character.
James joined the church, under the pastorate of his father, at Bethany, York County, South Carolina. He was received as a student of Theology on September 26th 1879, by the First Presbytery at a called meeting at Union, South Carolina. He received his theological training at Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, South Carolina.
Rev. Boyce was licensed by the First Presbytery at Shiloh A.R.P. in Lancaster County, South Carolina on September 7th 1881, with Dr. Lathan officiating. He was ordained by the Kentucky Presbytery at Hinkston on December 16th 1882. For one year after licensure he assisted his father, who at that time had charge of Pisgah, Bethany, Kings Mt. and other congregations. The Synod of 1882 appointed him to work in Louisville, Kentucky.
On October 17th 1883, Rev. Boyce was married to Miss Jennie Isabella Thompson, a daughter of Robert Alexander Thompson and his wife, Elizabeth Jane Fleming; at Headquarters, in Nicholas County, Kentucky. Jennie Isabella Boyce was born at Headquarters on November 23rd 1859. They had four children.
Rev. James Boyce was twice invited to return to Bethany. He was called as pastor of 7th and Chestnut Street Church, Louisville, Kentucky in 1884 and was installed October 3rd 1884; Bethany A.R.P. prospered under his ministry.
Rev. Boyce left this charge in October 1896, to accept a call to Huntersville, North Carolina. He was installed there February 1st 1897. He demitted this charge April 1st, 1899, to accept the Presidency of Due West Female College. Rev. James Boyce has been stated clerk of Synod since 1890 and assistant clerk of 1st Presbytery since 1897. For ten years he was been editor of the Youth's Department of the "A. R. P." magazine.
