John married Sarah "Sallie" LETTON on November 18, 1890, in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri. Four children were born to the marriage; Carlisle (1891-1891), Orrin (1893-1983), Beulah (b. 1895, living 1910), Melvin (1906-1906).

In 1870 and 1880, John was in Carroll, Platte Co., Missouri, with his parents. By 1900, he was farming in Council Grove, Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma, with his wife and their children Orrin and Beulah. Living with John and Sarah in 1900 was John's paternal 1st cousin, Thomas Marion Hufford (1875-1945). By 1910, the family was in Hulen, Comanche Co., Oklahoma; John was farming. John's wife Sarah died in April 1912. He married Fanny B. (maiden name not known) before 1920, when he and Fanny were living in Thomas, Custer Co., Oklahoma. In 1930 and 1940, they were living in Deer Creek, Custer Co., Oklahoma; John was working as a carpenter in 1930. In 1940, he reported that he had completed one year of college, and his wife Fannie reported that she had completed four years of high school.
