Nelson, LCDR Lawrence D., USNR (Ret.)
passed away peacefully on July 20, 2011 at age 88. Born on a farm in Hennessey, Oklahoma, his family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1930 where he graduated from Scottsdale Elementary and High School. In May 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy as a cadet aviator where he earned his naval wings and served in the Pacific for the remainder of World War II. He received his BS degree in Industrial Education from Oregon State University. Recalled to service in the Navy during the Korean War, he pursued a 30 year military career flying fixed wing and rotary aircraft in various duty stations. He was designated as Navy Helicopter Aviator Number 895. Retiring from the Navy in June 1970, Lawrence continued his education earning his MA in Community College Education at the U of A. He taught both community college and high school for ten years and served as Career Education Coordinator for Pinal County. He became a member of the Arizona Chapter of the Mayflower Society in 1986 and served as Deputy Governor from 1991 through 1994. Nelson has been a past president of the Arizona Reserve Officers Association, Toastmasters Club and the Tucson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of the Scottsdale Historical Society, Arizona Genealogical Society, Scottsdale Old Timers, Sons and Daughters of the '89-er Pioneers (Hennessey, OK), Elks Lodge (San Manuel, AZ) and Phi Delta Kappa, U of A. Lawrence is survived by his wife of 5 years, Mary Sorenson Nelson, son John, daughters Patricia McWilliams (Tom), Susan Matthews (George), 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Visitation is at Evergreen Mortuary and Cemetary located at Oracle and Ft. Lowell in Tucson from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24th immediately followed by a memorial service. Internment will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23015 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, on Monday, July 25th at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Larry's name to a charity of the donor's choice.
