Glenn Albert Dinkel Sr., 86, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at his residence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2009 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present at 6 p.m., at the funeral home.

Glenn was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Sioux City, to Otto V. and Lena (Winter) Dinkel. He received his education at East High School in Sioux City before enlisting on Nov. 5, 1942, in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He served his country stationed in the states, where he was an airplane and engine mechanic. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon. Before receiving his honorable discharge on Feb. 28, 1946, he achieved the rank of staff sergeant.

He returned to Sioux City and married Alberta Engleman. To this union four children were born, Linda, Glenn Jr., Kevin and Tom. Years later, the couple divorced. In 1950, he joined the Sioux City Fire Department, from which he retired in August 1980. He married Mercedes Johnson, who preceded him in death in 1991.

He was an active member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple and the Wrecking Crew for more than 30 years. He enjoyed his membership to the Eagles Club. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, but without a doubt, he enjoyed country dancing above all else.

He is survived by his children, Linda and her husband, Jim Bowen, of Cummings, Ga., Glenn A. Dinkel Jr. and his wife, Lyn, of Sioux City, Kevin R. Dinkel and his wife, Diane, of Golden, Colo., and Tom Dinkel of El Cajon, Calif.; grandchildren, Stephanie, Angie, Jamie and Sheena; sisters, Lois Choquette and Betty Johnson, both of Sioux City; 10 great-grandchildren; and longtime friend, Delores Sykora.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Dinkel; his wife, Mercedes; and his ex-wife, Alberta.
