The second of two sons of Capt. Richard Storrs Bourne, Sr. and Excie Freeman Nye (Gibbs) Bourne, Allen was born just four months before his father's death from heart disease at age 34. He never married and died of a "mixed pulmonary infection" (with tuberculosis a possible contributing factor) just four days after his 42nd birthday.
