Senator J. E. Edwards is Dead: Deceased was a well known leader of Reactionary Republicans in State Senate.

FORSYTH, MT., Oct. 12. --- J. E. Edwards, former State Senator from Rosebud County died here today, after a protracted sickness due to cancer of the esophagus.

Senator Edwards was 59 years old, a son of Major General Oliver Edwards.
He was born at Warsaw, IL. July 17, 1866.

He left school when 17 years old and moved west, settling first in Colorado, a few years later moving to Indian Territory and then to Texas.

In 1889 he came to Montana, driving cattle overland from Texas.

He settled in Fergus County, and rose to foreman of the N. Bar Cattle Ranch, owned by the late Thomas Cruse.

While in that position he was married to Miss Julia Anderson, daughter of Reese Anderson, a Montana Pioneer and a member of the party that first discovered gold in Montana.

Mrs. Edwards and two daughters survive.
A son died several years ago.

In the latter 90's he went into the Mercantile Business at Junction now the town of Custer, MT., and a year later he was appointed Indian Agent for the Crow Tribe, from which he was promoted to Inspector of Indian Agencies, after three years service.

In the early part of this century he went into business in Forsyth where he had resided since.

Senator Edwards represented his county in the State Senate from 1917 until 1923 and served as President Protem of the Senate on several occasions and for years as a floor leader.

John E. Edwards was considered too big a man to be interred in that mausoleum of political has beens --- the State Senate, and was put up by his party for the office of U.S. Senator in 1916.

On being defeated he retired to private life.
