Before 1835, he married Zillah Lee Posey. He is mentioned in connection with the history of the Bethel Baptist Church, near Woodruff, when, in the Spartanburg Associational Meeting in 1882, the history of that church was reviewed. According to those minutes, he was ordained as a Deacon in May, 1851.

In Memory of Zachariah Lanford, who died Mar 9th 1858, in the 54 year of his age. He was a man of honest Christian principles, having a warm attachment for his church of which he was a deacon with a high regard for truth in all his tranactions. These with firmness and candor, were the leanding point in his life, and relying upon the promises of Christ, he died to meet the reward of a faithful Christian.
