David Allen Smith was born January 19, 1936 in Lakeview, Oregon. David died August 11, 2011 in Eugene, Oregon. He was the second son of Benny and Barbara (Harris) Smith.
David has 2 brothers, Johnny (deceased) and Tommy of Santa Clarita, CA and one sister, Myrn Milne of Westminster, CA. He grew up in Willow Ranch, CA where he attended elementary school before progressing to high school in Alturas, CA. He graduated in 1954.
David and his friend Roy were traveling to Alaska in 1964 when they, with their vehicles, were turned around at the border due to the earthquake that had just occurred in Alaska. He and Roy started back to California, getting as far as Eugene, Oregon when they ran out of money ans so they stopped in "Eugene and got jobs. David always commented that, "that year Eugene got 365 days of rain and if he ever got enough money he was leaving Eugene!"
In 1967 he stopped at a grocery store that was next door to a beauty salon where he saw a young lady working and he said, I'm going to marry that person!" That person was Donna Chapman. He and Donna were married in Junction City, Oregon on June 7, 1968.
David worked for L. D. McFarland Company in Eugene for 18 years. After that he worked for the Lane County Bridge Department before retiring due to illness.
David excelled in detailed woodworking, making various construction toys. He called his toy making, "the Little Dipper Construction company." It was named after his son-in-law, Paul Minnick's company, called "Big Dipper Construction Company" in Wasilla, Alaska.
David donated some of his toys to the logging conference in Eugene and to "Santa's Give Away" through the Long Tom Grange, where he and Donna were active members. He was "Mr. December" in the 2007 Long Tom Grange fund raising calendar, with donations going to the local schools in the Junction City area. He was a 51 year member of the Masons and he was past president of the Serenity Lane Alumni Association in 1978. He was a grateful recovering alcoholic for 34 years.
David has three children, Debbie (Gary) Gasky, of Cottage Grove, Oregon; Diane (Paul) Minnick and Doug (Johna) Smith both of Wasilla, Alaska. He has 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

The Long Tom Grange (a local rural community hall), created a calendar in 2004 featuring their grange men over 50 posing without clothes and dressed behind various outdoor props. "Nude" men raising money for our schools!?
A contentious community debate on pornography, propriety, and purpose created a global media blitz. The calendars were featured on 60 Minutes, CNN, MSNBC, twice on the Today Show, US, People, and Globe magazines, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. Television and radio interviews included Hong Kong, Great Britain, Canada and Poland.
With only a simple website, the calendars were sold in over 63 countries, grossing more than $650,000 in sales!
The Long Tom Grange supplied the entire Junction City, OR school district with new math books, a re-energized music department, research library, school security, drama department and more.
