U.S. Congressman. He completed preparatory studies, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Staunton, Virginia. He was Commonwealth attorney for the Rockbridge County Court (1817-43), Commonwealth attorney for the circuit court of Pocahontas County (1817-43) and a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1821. In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses, serving until his death.
