John's parents were: Orrin J Berlin {1861-1959} and Eve Beighley{1862-1938}. Orrin attended the Titusville Soldiers' Orphans School in 1870 due to the fact that his father Eli had served in the Civil War and was killed at the battle of Gettysburg on 2 July 1863.
Solders' Orphans School's were organized by the Pennsylvania State Government to take care of orphans of men who died while fighting in the Civil War.

Obituary: "John C. Berlin, 65, well known resident of 1240 Otter Street, Franklin, died in the Franklin hospital at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday. He had been admitted to the Hospital Monday evening.
Mr. Berlin was the son of Orrin and Eva Berlin and was born in Franklin, March 16, 1888. Except for several years, Mr. Berlin resided in Franklin his entire life, where he was well known and had many friends.
He was a conductor on the New York Central Railroad for more than 39 years, retiring April 10, 1951, because of ill health.
Mr. Berlin was a member of the First Baptist Church, the I.O.O.F. No. 255, The Woodsman of the World and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
He is survived by his wife, Dorella McFetridge Berlin, and the following children; Mrs. Norman Bardsley, Kenneth J. Berlin of Franklin, and Miss Katherine Berlin at home. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Kathy Darlene Bardsley and two brothers and one sister, James Berlin and Ben H. Berlin and Mrs. Ethel Manning of Franklin.
