His father's headstone looks like it was engraved Monuel J. Smith but is actually Manuel Jackson Smith Sr.. He and his wife Elizabeth Workman-Smith once owed the Hodgson Mill, which they sold to Alva and Mary Jane Hodgson, Mary Jane was Manuel Jackson Sr.'s daughter and the sister of Manuel Jackson Smith Jr.
