Alabama Governor. He graduated from Erskine College South Carolina in 1884, was principal of Lower Peachtree Academy until 1887, studied law at the University of Alabama, was admitted to the bar in 1888 and started a law practice in Camden, Alabama. Entering politics, he served on the Democratic Executive Committee (1901-02), was a judge of the Alabama circuit court (1904-21) and served on the Alabama Supreme Court as associate justice (1921-28). In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat as the 39th Governor of Alabama, serving until 1935. During his term, he inherited a law that allowed Alabama to collect an income tax, a state inheritance tax were passed, a budget control act was adopted, state employees’ salaries were cut in an effort to alleviate the growing debt. After leaving office, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
