U.S. Congressman. He attended the University of Alabama, graduated from Centre College Kentucky in 1856, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858 and commenced to practice law in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Entering politics, was a member of the Alabama State Senate (1871-76) and a professor of equity jurisprudence at the University of Alabama (1875-86). In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving until 1887. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death while on a trip to Kentucky.
