U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, in 1858, studied law at Harvard University in 1859, but never practiced law. During the Civil War, he served as Captain in the 26th Alabama Regiment, Confederate Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the war, he was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1870 to 1872, 1874 to 1878). In 1880, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Burwell B. Lewis, serving until 1881. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in planting and cotton manufactures until his death at age 65.
