Johann Joachim Wilkens was born on February 26, 1857 in Klein Meckelsen, Konigreich Hannover and died (age 71) on May 2, 1928 at the Good Samaritan Home, Arthur, Cass, North Dakota. His parents were Ludwig Wilkens born on November 1, 1826 in Grob Meckelsen, Konigreich, Hannover and died November 29, 1891. Maria Holst born on October 17, 1829 in Sittensen, Konigreich Hannover and died in 1874. He married Maria Lampe of Harsefield, Germany on April 22, 1893 in Ada, Norman, MN. She was born on October 5, 1870 and died (age 53) on December 1, 1923 in Pleasant View, Norman, MN. Her parents were Heinrich and Meta Bode Lampe. John J. Wilkens worked in Liverpool, England and Edinburgh, Scotland in the sugar factory prior to coming to Minnesota. There he then worked on the large Lockhart farm of nine sections. Mr. Wilkens returned to Germany, and upon returning to America he was accompanied by Maria Lampe, his new wife. They lived the first few years in a vacant homestead cabin, owned by Hein Henrichs, where Mary and Henry were born. There being no more homestead land available, J. Joachim and his brother Diedrick Wilkens, bought one hundred sixty acres of virgin prairie at $8 an acre and another forty acres adjoining, dividing it evenly. They bought the land from the Northern Pacific Railroad. - Lila Hegrenes
