CROGHAN — Edna F. Hoch, 86, formerly of Steepleview Courts, died Thursday at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since June 2006.

Mrs. Hoch was a homemaker for most of her life. As a young woman in the 1940s, she was a cook and baker in many of the area's logging camps, including Belfort and Number Four. She also was a cook at Fenton House, a hotel at Number Four, and at the Belfort Inn, where her specialty was baking pies.

At one time she was a cook and housekeeper for the Silverthorne and Cornwall families, who operated the former J.P. Lewis Paper Co., Beaver Falls, and would have to travel by boat to reach their estates in the Thousands Islands. She also was the head cook and baker for the former Father Leo Memorial School, and for many years cooked for some of the Franciscan priests of St. Stephen's parish, including the Rev. Leo A. Wiley.

Additionally, she was a cook and bartender at the former Miller House Hotel, as well as being a self-employed caterer for many years, specializing in weddings. Following her marriage, she worked for many years on the family's farm on Swiss Road and during the 1970s, she worked for Beaverite Products, Beaver Falls, and in the housecleaning department at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville.

Born March 31, 1922, in the town of New Bremen, daughter of Henry J. and Harriet "Hattie" Kohler Aucter, she was educated in Dicob's Corners Country School.

She married Vernon Hoppel on June 17, 1946, in St. Stephen's Church. He died Sept. 21, 1949, of injuries he suffered in World War II. She married William A. Hoch on Jan. 6, 1954, in St. Stephen's Church. He died March 10, 1967.

Mrs. Hoch was a communicant of St. Stephen's Church and a member of its Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member and past president of Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She also was a member of Croghan OBC, Pomona Grange and Kirschnerville Grange.

Mrs. Hoch also was a caregiver for the terminally ill in the Croghan area and was an active Girl Scout troop leader and was active with Belfort 4-H Club.

She enjoyed bowling, dancing, camping, playing euchre and especially producing maple syrup on the family's farm.

Surviving are five sons and their wives; four daughters and their husbands; two sisters; two sisters-in-law; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, John and Ronald Aucter, and three sisters, Helena Yauney, Leona Briot and Florence Berry, died before her.
