In Memory

Rev. George Samuel Hayden was born in 1869 and died May 10 1917, aged 48 years, 8 months and 14 days. He was married to Miss Nannie Allen Sanders in 1890. This union was blessed with eight children, all of whom, with his wife, survive him. Besides his immediate family he leaves a mother, four sisters, six brothers, and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

His death removes from Carlisle County one of the most wide awake and useful of her citizens. In early mandhood he professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist Church. He lived a devoted Christian to the day of his death. He was never happier then when engaged in Sunday School work or participating in the other services of his church. He was for a long time superintendent of the Baptist Sunday School at Milburn and at other times served as teacher. He gave liberally of his means whenever and wherever called upon to help in the cause of Christ. There was no publick spirited enterprise for the common good around him but received his support.

In his home he was a devoted husband and a wise, gentle, loving father. As a citizen he was lawabiding and was content to attend only to his own affairs. Patiently he endured all bodily suffering and calmly met trouble and disappointments. He feared not those who were able to harm the body, for he realised his life - his soul - was in the hand of him who cares even for the sparrow. He had been in failing health for months, but when possible was always directing the farm work. On the morning of May 10 he left the house between 8 and 9 O'Clock. No alarm was felt until he failed to return for dinner. A search was soon begun. A number of men from Milburn were called and they, with the family and neighbors, kept up the search until late in the afternoon his body was found in one of the fields. He had been dead for hours. There was no indication that he had suffered much pain. He lay as if weary and tired he had laid down to rest and dream. And the rest and dream was sweet for in it god appeared and lovingly released his spirit from the weary, worn-out body and took it unto himself.

In the great sorrow of giving up his companionship comes the sweet assurance to those who loved him that in a little while, in God's own good time, we shall meet again.

The funeral services were conducted in the Milburn Baptist Church by two of his former pastors, Bros. Gardner and Rice, after which his body was laid to rest in the Milburn Cemetery by the Brotherhood of Masons. A friend.
