Irwin was educated at the Greersburg Academy and began teaching in 1870. He made a tour thru Kansas, teaching school and going to school. He went thru Indian Territory, (Oklahoma) and returned home in 1873 where he taught school for six terms, went to farming, and then got married. Irwin died September 26, 1890 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in the Old Free Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Darlington Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania
