Mary A. Gentry Hillman was the daughter of Meredith Poindexter Gentry. She had been previoulsy married to Mr. Daniel Hillman who died Jan 3, 1885. Mary's obit follows which is transcribed from the Nashville Banner, May 19, 1908, p.4, col. 4.: Mary A. Gentry Hillman - Prominent Here in Former Days. Mrs. Mary A. Hillman Dies Suddenly in Trigg Furnace, KY. Mrs. Mary A. Hillman, formerly of Nashville, and the widow of Mr. Daniel Hillman, who some years ago was one of the best known and most influential citizens in Nashville, died suddenly last night at Trigg Furnace, KY. She was related to some of the most prominent families in this city. The news of her death came as a shock to her relatives and friends, no news previous having been received of her illness. She was 67 years of age. Her early life was passed in Nashville where she was a recognized Belle in society. The old Hillman home in which she resided at one time was on the site of the present Methodist Publishing House and was one of the handsomest homes in the city and the seat of the most lavish hospitality. Before her marriage, she was Miss Mary Gentry, daughter of Mr. Meredith P. Gentry. In her younger days she was noted for her beauty and with this combined a disposition almost unrivaled in its sweetest and gentleness. Her death will bring sorrow to scores of devoted friends and admirers. She is survived by two sons, Mr. Meredith P. Gentry Hillman of Napier, where he is a Manager of the Iron Furnace, and Mr. James H. Hillman of Birmingham, Ala. The following stepchildren also survive: Mrs. D. C. Scales of Nashville, Mr. J. Hart Hillman of Pittsburg, Penn. She leaves one sister, Mrs. T.T. Hillman of Birmingham. The remains will be brought to Nashville and taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Scales on Berry Street in East Nashville, from where the funeral services will be held and the body will be interred at Mt. Olivet by the side of her husband who died about twenty-three years ago.
