Loveda Virginia Bren, 92, died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at her home.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 9 at Feigum Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 10, at First United Methodist Church, with interment to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.

Loveda was born on July 25, 1917, to Pearl and Herman Ehrismann in the Loveda Virginia Hotel in Monticello, Iowa, where her father worked as a cook. When Loveda was six months old, they moved to Wagner. As the oldest of eight, she took on many roles, including midwife and nanny.
In 1936, she met Adolph Bren through a neighbor. They married in November 1937, had their first child, Mavis, in 1939, then eight more, Joyce, Kenny, Lloyd, Gary, Ardis, Michael, Merle and Wally, while farming along Seven Mile Creek. Adolph worked on the dam in Pickstown and in the early 1950s they moved to Fort Pierre to work on the Oahe Dam.

Adolph was injured two weeks before the completion of the dam and stayed home to care for their final child, Pamela, who was born in 1959. Loveda went to work as a maid at the Terrace Motel to keep the family afloat. During that time, Loveda was also the Burke family nanny and often referred to them as her second family.

Loveda and Adolph made many cross-country trips to visit their sons and daughters with children and grandchildren in tow.

After Adolph passed in 1984, Loveda spent the remaining years in the company of family and friends. She retired from the State Motel as head maid in 1984, where she was well-known for her meticulous housekeeping.

During retirement, she enjoyed embroidering, quilting, gardening, bird watching, baking, canning, reading, storytelling, bingo and a good joke. Loveda always kept a jar full of her homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for the visiting grandchildren. She attended rodeos and spent many days at the Gregg family ranch. George Strait made her melt and she had the pictures and cassette tapes to prove it.

In 2008, she became a great-great-grandma. Those close to her knew how great she was long before then as Loveda was full of hope, strength, and unconditional love.

In May 2010, she was diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer. She put her faith in God and he took her from her bright blue home full of wind chimes on July 8.

She leaves behind six children, Mavis Olson, Joyce (Bud) Leafgreen, Lloyd (Danna) Bren, Gary (Sherry) Bren, Wally Bren and Pamela (Bryan) Dockter; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; two brothers; three sisters; and many others who called her Grandma Bren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, three sons, and a daughter.
