Mr. Foley passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 in Jewett.

Jim Oliver (J.O.) Foley was born on May 9, 1921 at the Hardy Ranch in the New Hope Community in Limestone County to Thomas Jefferson and Lillie Mae Foley.

He was raised in the Leon County area, attended school at Little Flock Community School/Church, Ephesus School and Jewett School; when he left school during the sixth grade to work on the farm with his family. He served during War War II on October 29, 1942 in the Army Air Corps, and was honorably discharged December 19, 1945. During his time with the Army he was classified as a sharp shooter but was in charge of the Officers mess hall.

In July of 1948 he enrolled in the distribution of education, a school taught by Edward Starkey and after 9 months he transferred to the Agricultural Farm school taught by Milton Kirpatrick and later Chili Hines from Centerville, the school was then moved to Flynn and was then taught by Bonner Murff. The school later ended in Buffalo and was taught by Bobby Lewis. He attended these schools for a total of three and a half years.

He married Ruby Jane Durant and they had four children. He joined the Jewett Masonic Lodge #427 in January of 1949 and was worshipful master in 1969-70; he received the golden trowel award in 2001. He joined the order of Eastern Star in Clute and transferred his membership to Buffalo Chapter #157 and has been a member for 50 plus years. He is a life time member of the Scottish Rite, a member of the Shriners and Shriners club of Freestone and Limestone County. He is also a member of the Southern Cherokee Tribe of Texas and is registered as a quarter Indian under his great grandparents and his grandmother which are registered in the trail of tears. He joined the VFW in Fairfield and in 1941 organized the VFW post in Jewett. He worked for Ethel Dowel Chemical Company in Freeport, TX. from 1952-1962 when he came back to Jewett. After his return to Jewett, he drove a school bus for Leon and was later hired by Brown and Root as a supply clerk supervisor in Fairfield for about 6 years (he was one of the last employees they had during the construction of Brown and Root) and he also worked for the Leon County Surveyors about 4 years.

Mr. Foley loved to hunt, fish, listen to his music and dance on Saturday night. He was born to farm and ranch, and loved to work with his mules and donkey. He never met a stranger and always brought a smile to peoples face with his stories and jokes. He had 90 wonderful, healthy years which allowed him to see many changes from the depression, wars, and the days of horse and buggy to the automobile. He loved life till the end and will missed by all his family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, two daughters, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mr. Foley was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Foley; grandson, Jim Kinard Foley; brother, Ross Foley; and his sister, Audrey Williams.
