John L. Wilkens called by death. Pioneer Settler of this section dies at his home in Anthony last Friday - 78 years old. John Ludwig Wilkens, well-known farmer of Anthony Township, and an early settler of this section, died at his home last Friday, January 28, 1927, after an illness extending over a period of about three years. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Pleasant View Church, of which the deceased was a member, and interment was made in the church cemetery. Rev. E.L. Lehne, pastor of the church officiated. The deceased was born in Germany on May 3, 1848 and spent his early boyhood in that country. He served in the army there during the Franco-Germany war in 1870-71. In 1874 he came to this country and a short time later he came to Norman County, where he has resided continuously since - a period of over 50 years. He was married here in 1882 to Margaretha Elisabeth Albrecht, and this union was blessed with ten children, nine of whom survive, in addition to the widow. The deceased was 78 years old at the time of his death. The children who survive are: William Wilkens, and Louis Wilkens of Lockhart, Mrs. E.T. (Marie) Sipe, Lockhart, Mrs. Otto (Anna) Fischer of Michigan, John Wilkens of North Dakota, Rudolph at home, Mrs. Frank (Elizabeth) Malakowski, Lockhart, Mrs. W. (Alvina) Gisselquist of Hibbing and Alice Wilkens at home. One brother and one sister also survive. The deceased had been prominently identified with early development of this section of Norman County, and had a large number of friends who regret his demise. The sympathy of all is extended to the surviving relatives.
