Howard Earl Durk, 103, of Columbia, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Solstice Senior Living.
He was born in Boone County, Missouri, on October 9, 1915, to William N. Durk and Pearl P. Durk.
His younger years were spent in Hallsville before moving to Columbia where he attended Hickman High School. In the early 1940’s, Howard worked at the Columbia Ice Plant where he was named “Most Handsome Ice Man”. He later worked for LaCrosse Lumber Company.
From 1943 to 1945, Howard served in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship USS Arkansas in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Upon returning home, Howard worked for Missouri Farmers Association in the tire division. He later transferred to Shelter Insurance where he retired after 35 years as a claims supervisor.
In 1936, he married Jewel Johnson who preceded him in death in 2001. They were long-time members of First Baptist Church.
Howard is survived by one son, Nelson (Debby) Durk of Columbia and two daughters Betty (Bill) Dowdy of Springfield and Deb (Steve) Snellen of Columbia. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Patrick (Stacy) Duncan, Keith (Erin) Dowdy, Beau Durk, and Ashlen (Collin) Hayward, and three great-grandchildren, Brenna Duncan, Parker Hayward, and Kelce Dowdy.
At the age of 92, Howard married Victoria Groff, and she survives. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, and he enjoyed tomato gardening, woodworking, volunteering at The Wardrobe and taking football tickets at Faurot Field until he was 90. His smile, wit, humor, and loving personality inspired family and friends throughout his life. The family would like to extend special gratitude to Heather Moore of Hearts in Harmony and her staff for their kindness and compassion.
Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2018 at Parker-Millard Funeral Service.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Parker-Millard Funeral Service.
Interment with full military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Expression of sympathy may be made to the charity of the Alzheimer’s Association.
