He was born in McKenna and had lived in Tacoma most of his life. He retired after 31 years as a circulation district manager for The News Tribune.
Mr. Herness was a member of Tacoma Elks Lodge, No. 174. He was also a 25-year member of the Western Washington Officials Association. In December 1980 he was inducted into the Washington Association of Collegiate Officials Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Linden Golf Club of Puyallup and was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Rhoda C. of the home; three daughters, Diane Manning, Mrs. Robert (Susan) Fagering, and Janet Curran, all of Tacoma; two sisters, Myrtle Kagler and Lillian McArthur, both of Tacoma; a brother, Percy, of Puyallup; and six grandchildren.
