John was the son of William and Ellen Gardner. He was the eldest of a family of six children, three brothers, Scott, Millard and Ross and two sisters, Ella and Sina, all of whom have preceded him.
He came to Iowa with his parents in 1857 and has remained here most of his life.
He was united in marriage to Helena Doward at the Terre Haute on Nov 10, 1871. To this union one child was born Minnie A. Woodmansee. He united with the Christian church when a young man and was baptized by Rev. Josephus C. Porter.
He went to one of the first high schools ever held in Leon. He taught 47 terms of school. At one time he conducted an implement store in Leon. For many years he resided on a farm near Leon and only last October moved to Leon.
He leaves to mourn his death his aged wife, his daughter, one granddaughter Thelma Gibbs and husband and two great granddaughters, Helen and June Gibbs, besides many other relatives and friends.
