The Thursday, 15 January 1925, edition of the Madison [Lake County, South Dakota] Daily Leader carried the following obituary (page 4, column 3):

MRS. GEORGE BELKNAP DIES AT HER HOME

PIONEER RESIDENT OF MADISON PASSES AWAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Mrs. George Belknap [Mary Ann Dykins Belknap], 85 years old, a pioneer resident of Madison and vicinity, died at her home in [Madison] about 6 o'clock yesterday [14 January 1925] evening following a lingering illness of several months.

Mrs. Belknap was born near Freeport, Illinois, August 13, 1839. When 10 years old [1849?], she moved with her parents to Fayette County, Iowa, where they settled on government land. Her first husband, Alfred Murphy, lost his life in the Civil War [actually, fighting Indians near Fort Pierre, Dakota Territory], and in 1867 she married George Belknap who survives her decease.

In addition to her husband, Mrs, Belknap is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Jennie Northrop of Plummer, Idaho; Mrs. Eva Salisbury of Hazelton, Iowa; Mrs. Cora Plowman of DeSmet [SD]; Mrs. J.V. [May Rosella] Regan of [Madison]; and two sons, George Murphy of Redlands, California, and Clyde Belknap of Spokane, Washington.

Mrs. Belknap has lived in Madison more than 34 years [since about 1891]. She was a member of the First Baptist church, a charter member of the local W.R.C. [National Woman's Relief Corps, Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic] chapter and the oldest member of the local Rebekah lodge. The two latter organizations will attend the funeral in a body.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Fred White officiating. Burial will be at Graceland cemetery. Only nearby relatives will attend.
