Lewis was born March 11, 1846, in Saxony, Germany. He died August 18, 1930, at his home in Hillsdale, Barron County, Wisconsin, aged 84 years, 5 months and 7 days and was buried near there in Evergreen Cemetery, Prairie Farm, Wisconsin. His military style gravestone is inscribed "Lewis Wert Co. G. 16 Wis. Inf."

Lewis married three times with his first marriage September 15, 1866, to Almira Bellman, at Blue Mounds, Dane County, Wisconsin. Her date and place of birth is unknown. She died May 9, 1890, at Prairie Farm, Barron County, Wisconsin, and is probably buried in the same cemetery as her husband, however no gravestone was seen by the gravestone of her husband. Their children were:

Lewis's second marriage was September 8, 1890, when he was married to Mary Ann Trelore or James, at Prairie Farm, by Roseman Kellogg, J.P. She died there November 7, 1904. Her place of burial is unknown. Their two children, were:

Lewis's third and last marriage was August 6, 1905, when he was united in marriage to Cora Belle Shields, at Prairie Farm, by Rev. H. W. Bedford. Her previous marriage in September 1876, to John Moore, ended in divorce at Helena, Montana. He was not a veteran. No children by this marriage. She died July 30, 1922, at Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin, and she was buried there in Nora Cemetery.

In the 1890 U.S. Census, Special Schedule, Lewis Wirt was listed as living in the Town of Prairie Farm, Barron County, Wisconsin, and as having served as a Private in Company K of the 16th Wisconsin Infantry, from January 2, 1862, to July 12, 1865, for total service of 3 years, 9 months and 15 days.

Lewis was a Civil War veteran who enlisted January 4, 1862, at Madison, Wisconsin, to serve three years as a Private in Company K of the 16th Wisconsin Infantry. On February 28, 1862, he was mustered into Federal service with Company K.

On November 4, 1862, Lewis was transferred to Company G of the same regiment. On January 3, 1864, he was discharged at Red Bone, Mississippi, in order to re-enlist the next day for three years as a veteran volunteer, thereby qualifying for a $400.00 re-enlistment bounty. On his enlistment papers it was noted that he had re-enlisted February 2, 1864, in Company G. At that time he was listed as a 19 year old, 5'4" tall, German born laborer, with brown hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion.

On August 22, 1863, Lewis was granted a furlough, length undetermined. On the muster roll of Sept/Oct. 1864, it was noted that he was absent as guard for the 3rd Division Supply Train.

On July 12, 1865, he was mustered out of Federal service with Company G at Louisville, Kentucky. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was due $190.00 of his re- enlistment bounty.

After his discharge, Lewis returned to Blue Mounds, Dane County, Wisconsin. In 1871, he moved to Barron County, Wisconsin, where he resided up to October 10, 1921, when he entered the Wisconsin Veterans Home, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

On June 3, 1882, Lewis filed Application No. 451,228 for an Invalid Veteran's Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 438,871.

LEWIS WERT.

Lewis Wert was born in Saxony, Germany, March 11, 1846, and came to this country when about 11 years old, spending his boyhood days in Dane county near Blue Mounds. The Civil war broke out when he was 15 years of age and he enlisted in Co. G, 16th Wis. Vol. Inf., at Ridegeway and served two years with this company through some of the bloodiest battles of the war, receiving two minor wounds. He was honorably discharged at Red Bone, Miss, and a few days later re-enlisted in Co. K at Boliver, Miss., for the balance of the war. He was with Sherman in the march to the sea and at the close of the war marched in the grand review at Washington, D.C. He was discharged after three years and six months in active service.

He returned to Dane county and farmed there until 1870, leaving in Sept. 1871, with a horse team and wagon for Barron county where he worked for Knapp, Stout & Co., in pinery and mill for a time. In 1872 he took a homestead about five miles north of Prairie Farm and built a home in the wilderness. He lived there 16 years, when the buildings were swept away by a tornado, following which he sold the place and removed to the farm a mile north of Prairie Farm which he owned when he died. He farmed for 33 years, retired in 1918 and removed to Rice Lake where he resided until 1924 when he removed to Hillsdale where he remained until his death at 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the age of 84 years, five months and seven days.

He was a charter member and last known living member of the August Roemhild post No. 237, G.A.R., Prairie Farm. He helped to build the M.E. church of that village and was a member and supporter of it as long as he lived there. He was widely known as a patriotic citizen, good neighbor, kind and loving husband and father.

He was married in 1866 to Elmira Bellman at Blue Mounds and their union was blessed with eight children: Lorenzo of Ladysmith, Charles of Seattle, Wash., Fred of Idaho, Frank and Victor of Prairie Farm, and three who with the mother preceded him in death, Lavina, William and Mary Belle (Mrs. Frank Brown).

In 1891 he was married to Mary Ann James, and to this union were born two children: Lulu (Mrs. Nicholas Sather) and Lewis, both of Prairie Farm. His second wife preceded him in death and in 1905 he married Cora Shields who died at Rice Lake in July 1922.

He leaves to mourn his loss, six sons, one daughter, two stepdaughters, 34 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, besides several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 20, at the Prairie Farm Methodist church, the Rev. W. H. Thompson officiating. Sons of Veterans acted as pall bearers, music and singing was render by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hager and Chester Kahl, the American Legion post was present in a body and a firing squad rendered military honors at the grave in Evergreen cemetery.

Among those present from away at the funeral were Lorenzo Wirth of Ladysmith, Edward and James Wirth, Mrs. Carrie Pidkwirth and Mrs. Grace Bruder of Minneapolis, Mrs. Anna Shoemaker and Mrs. Lorin Granger of Hillsdale, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Woodard and Mr. and Mrs. F. Lentz of Barron, Mrs. Mary Heil, daughter and two sons of Cameron, Mrs. McMahon and daughter of Menomonie, Mrs. J.P. Qualy, Mrs. Z.
