"Helen (Yaeger) Coolley, 87, of Danvillle, passed away Wednesday (June 1, 1994) at her home. She was born Dec. 5, 1906, in Brazil, Ind., the daughter of John Henry and Bertha LeMaster Yaeger.
Following her graduation from Brazil High School, she attended DePauw University at Greencastle, Ind., and graduated from Indiana State University at Terre Haute, Ind.
On May 30, 1935, in Indianapolis, Helen Yaeger married Marion F. "Doc" Coolley, attorney and former manager of Red Grange, the Illini Football Galloping Ghost. Doc preceded her in death in 1955. Marion Coolley was the son of Dr. Elmer Burt Coolley, a former Danville physician.
Active in community activities throughout her life, Mrs. Coolley began her career teaching music at Oaktown, Ind., and Westville, Ill. Later her energies were devoted to the Girl Scouts of America, the Salvation Army and the American Association of University Women.
She was named "Woman of the Year" by the Danville Business & Professional Women and voted "Outstanding Woman of the Year" by the Commercial-News.
Throughout her lifetime, she served on various boards and committees. She was president of the YWCA Board, chairwoman of the Women's Division of United Way, a three-term member of School District #118, member of the Women's Board of Lakeview Hospital, a 29-year member of the Lakeview Medical Center Auxilliary Executive Board and served on the Vermilion County Tuberculosis Association Board.
Mrs. Coolley was a charter member of the Danville Symphony Board and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Mary and Martha Guild.
A large portion of Helen Coolley's personal life was dedicated to the Danville Country Club, the Danville Boat Club and the Danville Garden Club, (Herb Group).
When she wasn't traveling extensively to Europe, India, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Egypt, Mexico and other exotic places, she shared her years with the Vodka Girls and BGWNS.
Survivors include: one daughter, Marilyn Coolley Carley (Donald) of La Jolla, Calif.; one granddaughter, Kirsten "K.C." Himan Carley (Richard) Thivosol of Begur, Spain; two stepgrandsons, Clay and David Carley; two brothers, George and Lera Yaeger of Terre Haute and Luther and Mary Louise Yaeger of Houston; a sister, Mary Hay of Reno, Nev.; and many dear close friends, including Lela McGrath of Danville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Yaeger and John Vernon Yaeger."
